It’s mind-boggling how many of us have given up with taking precautions and caring about others, using the upcoming holidays as an excuse to host unsafe indoor gatherings. Have we not learned anything at all? There have been no correlations between contracting the virus and taking giant shits. There might even be another shortage of toilet paper again. It’s tiring to be slapped with more and more restrictions as time goes by. It’s as if we decided that the consequences don’t matter anymore, especially when the holidays are approaching. It’s understandable that as a people, we’re suffering from pandemic fatigue, but this is far from over. San Francisco might also have a curfew in the near future. Most of California is now in the highest COVID tier, which has led to most counties being hit with a curfew. Despite people having experience with the pandemic, positive COVID rates continue to rise. It was nice to see another human being, although there were face masks involved with the interaction. Salad OlivieĪfter finishing our orders, I happened to run into a friend I haven’t seen in a while who lives just a few blocks away from the bakery. Although a salad, it’s another dish that’s not healthy, which isn’t the point. The dill gave the salad more of an herbaceous depth of flavor, and without it the plate could be considered too rich in fat. The cubed potatoes and vegetables were creamy and fully seasoned. After taking a few bites out of it, it was clearly a potato salad. My girlfriend ordered the Salad Olivie, which is a Russian-style potato salad with turkey, peas, carrots, and eggs topped with dill. It’s another comforting dish that I should visit more often. It wasn’t a well-balanced plate, despite the pickle slice, but that’s not why you order it. When I cut into the meat, the butter inside still oozed out and the mashed potatoes soaked up the delicious fat, which is always a sight to see. This is one of my favorite dishes off of their menu. I ordered the Chicken a La Kiev, which is a chicken breast stuffed with butter and herbs with my choice of mashed potatoes and crispy onions on top. I need to work on walking away from Memory Lane. The only thing that’s missing is the people I used to eat with here. I haven’t visited here since the pandemic began and I miss many aspects of this bakery, from the bread to the food, even the Russian woman that seems constantly angry at customers. The smell of freshly baked bread continues to linger in the air. The chalkboard menus above the cash register still remain for visitors to peruse. When you enter inside, the cases of pastries and desserts are still there like nothing has changed, with goods lined up from front to back to be ready for purchase and consumption. Even during the pandemic, there’s still a line out the door, but instead it’s more spread out for social distancing. This Russian bakery is another legacy business, which started back in 1953 and is currently owned by Mike and Marika Fishman since 2008. Today we’re sitting outside in front of Cinderella Bakery.

My girlfriend thought it would be a good change of pace to get out for a bit of fresh air while the sun is still up and return to a spot that I used to visit almost weekly. The parklet that was here before COVID has expanded to better accommodate for outdoor seating with more tables and overhead covers. I’m with my girlfriend on Balboa Street between 5th and 6th Avenue, the southern part of the neighborhood that experiences heavy foot traffic due to the number of popular restaurants that reside here. The weather is a bit nippy, yet you’re almost burning if you stay out in the sun too long. It’s a sunny Friday afternoon in the Inner Richmond.
